CMPS1134 - Fundamentals of Computing

This course provides students with a foundation for future courses in Computer Science. The course is a broad survey of the discipline through topics that allow students to understand the capabilities of computer systems in terms of: the computer architecture, operating systems and computer networks, software and software development, data organization and visualization, and the potential of computing machines.

The course also introduces students to the various career paths that are available to students who pursue Computer Science. The course will also introduce students to the importance of ethics in the field of Computer Science and the implications of computing on society.

Course Instructor

Dr. Kieran Ryan

Kieran Ryan is a Lecturer of the Information Technology Program at the University of Belize. Currently, he teaches Fundamentals of Computing and Database courses at the University of Belize. Additionally, he is one of the faculty members at UB who engage in research that is critical to the advancement of Belize and responds to the national development needs and priorities of the country.

Dr. Ryan also conducts research on information system success from a developing country perspective. His service work is making programing classes available at all secondary schools in Belize. In regard to his educational background, Dr. Ryan studied at Keimyung University where he earned his PhD in Management Information Systems. He also studied at National Tsing Hua University, earning his International MBA in Technology Management.
